The church of St.Mary, or commonly known as Nane Maryam, in west Azerbaijan province, Urmia city, is considered by historians to be the second oldest church in the world. It is believed that it has been built in 32AD.
Marco Polo, the famous Italian traveler, had once visited the church and described it in his book. A Chinese princess, who has a role in the reconstruction of the building, wrote her name on a stone on the church wall.
The church is totally different from other churches. It has no chairs or a room of confession. The current building belongs to Sassanian era and it has a combination of Sassanian and Arsacid architecture.
